Pirates down Bearcats 14-6

The Sneads, Fla., High School Pirates came up with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open the game on the way to a 14-6 Tuesday victory over the Bainbridge High School Bearcats in Sneads.

The Bearcats, who were 9-8 overall and 5-5 in Region 1AAAA play, going into Friday’s Region 1AAAA double header with the Americus-Sumter County High School Panthers in Americus, took the early lead, jumping out front 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Drew Kelley ignited the rally with a two-out single.

Steven Lightfoot came in as a courtesy runner for Kelley. Third baseman Tyler Hutchins then singles, moving Lightfoot up to second.

Right fielder Diante Smith then stepped to the plate and smashed a double, driving in Lightfoot and Hutchins.

The Pirates came up with seven in the bottom of the first to go ahead 7-2. The rally was highlighted by a single, a double, a pair of walks and a hit batsman.

The Pirates rallied for another run with a single and a double in the bottom of the second, to go up 8-2, but the Bearcats rallied for three more runs in the top of the third to pull within three at 8-5.

Catcher Blake Voyles started the Bearcats third with a single and came around to score on a double by Kelley.

Hutchins singled in Kelley and moved up to second and third on a fielder’s choice and an error. He tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Timmons.

The Pirates five run bottom of the fourth inning rally, which featured a pair of singles and a two run triple, put them ahead 13-6.

They added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a stolen base and a single.

The Bearcats scored their final run of the day in the top of the seventh. It was scored by Voyles, who walked, moved up to second on a fielder’s choice and came in on a single by second baseman Sutton Reece.
