The second-grade students at John Johnson Elementary School got the opportunity to go to the Muskogee Pow Wow 2009. This was the celebration of the Creek Indian tribe held in Whigham, Ga. This special trip was funded by a grant from The Decatur County Schools Foundation. The students had a wonderful time and learned a great deal about the Creek Indians. Hands-on demonstrations were given showing how the Creek used tools and weapons to meet their needs. Dressed in authentic costumes, many of them were descendants of the original Creek tribe that lived in this area. Learning about the Native Americans that lived in Georgia is a Georgia Performance Standard for second grade.
