Lady Cats reach Region 1AAAA semifinals

Alexis Burke poured in a game-high 26 points Tuesday to lead coach Latreisha Moon’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats to a 68-31 victory over the Upson-Lee High School Lady Knights in the quarterfinal round of the Region 1AAAA basketball tournament at Westside Macon High School.

The win put the Lady Cats in Friday’s tournament semifinal round against the Lee County High School Lady Trojans, who edged the Jones County High School Lady Greyhounds 60-58 in overtime Tuesday on a banked-in jumper by Lindsey Crawford that just beat the buzzer.

The win over the Lady Knights also assured the Lady Cats a berth in the state Class AAAA tournament, which begins next Thursday on various home courts.

The Lady Cats entered yesterday’s game against the Lady Trojans with 24-2 regular season record. They were a perfect 6-0 in Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region play during the regular season. April Thomas scored 8. Takenya Daniels scored 11 to led the Lady Knights.

Coach Moon said she was proud of her team and the effort they put forth against the Lady Knights.

Bria Harris and Thomas joined Burke in the Lady Cats double-figure scoring column. Burke scored 16 points and Thomas put in 12.

The Lady Trojans, were 19-7 going into Friday’s quarterfinal round game with the Lady Cats. The Lady Greyhounds finish 13-13.

Leading the Lady Greyhounds 26-20 at halftime, the Lady Trojans scored the first 6 points of the third quarter to increase their advantage over the Lady Trojans to 32-20.
