Funeral services for Deacon Sylvester Allen, 58, of Bainbridge, were held Sunday, Jan. 31, at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, Ga., with the Rev. Henry Hogan Jr. officiating.
Interment followed in the church’s cemetery with Mr. Allen’s former co-workers at Texpar Energy and his nephews serving as active pallbearers.
Born April 2, 1951, in Miller County, Ga., Mr. Allen died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Memorial Hospital and Manor in Bainbridge.
Mr. Allen graduated from East Baker County High School in Newton. He received a Bachelor of Science from Fort Valley State College in 1972. He was chairman of the deacon board at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, where he was an active member since his youth. He worked at Amoco Fibers in Bainbridge for 25 years and worked at Texpar Energy for 10 years. His hobby was buying and selling used cars.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Mae Allen; a daughter, Miranda Olivia Allen; and a brother, Harold Allen.
Survivors include his father, Harden Allen Jr. of Newton; his wife, Mrs. Marion Allen of Bainbridge; four sisters, Joanne Brown of Camilla, Mary Mack of Lithonia, Ga., Shanta Martin of Snellville, Ga., and Minnie Allen of Bainbridge; two brothers, Glenn Allen of Albany, Ga., and Cedrick Allen of Dulth, Ga.,; a foster brother, Tony D. Williams of Newnan, Ga.; a special friend of the family, Derwin Williams of Atlanta; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Bruton Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
