Grace teams make a sweep

Grace Christian Academy Cougars, Lady Cougars and junior varsity Cougars basketball teams won three homecoming games over Byne Christian School Saints, Lady Saints and junior varsity Saints teams from Albany Friday night at Perry Memorial Gymnasium.

The Cougars, who were led by Trey Kelley with 27 points, defeated the Byne Saints 71-54.

The Lady Cougars, who were led by Brock Bailey with 22 points, defeated the Byne Lady Saints 43-38. The junior varsity Cougars, who were led by Paul Soden with 10 points, defeated the Byne junior varsity Saints 35-18.

Kyle Harris scored 6 points for the junior varsity Cougars.

In the varsity boys game, the Cougars outscored the Saints 14-6 in the fourth quarter to pull ahead by double digits and nail down the victory. They led by nine, 57-48, entering the fourth quarter.

Clutch three-point shooting by Paul Randall Soden and Taylor McDonald was instrumental in the Cougars’ victory. Soden, who finished with 17 points, had five three-pointers in the first quarter, and McDonald, who finished with 16 points, had a three-pointer in the first quarter and three more in the second quarter.

After the Saints built a 9-3 early first-quarter lead, the Cougars went on a 14-0 run to take a 17-9 lead.

The run concluded with consecutive three-point jumpers from the right side by Soden.

In the varsity girls game, Bailey spread her 22 points over all four quarters.

She scored 4 in the first quarter, 6 in the second quarter, 9 in the third quarter and 3 in the fourth quarter. She had three-point field goals in the third and fourth quarters.

The varsity Cougars and Lady Cougars will host the Panhandle Christian Conference’s East Regional Tournament Feb. 12 and 13.

Among the visiting schools will be Emmanuel Christian School from Dothan, Ala., Covenant Christian School from Panama City, Fla., and Tallavana Christian School from Havana, Fla.
