John Bayides Jr

Funeral services for John James Bayides Jr., 66, of Rincon, Ga., were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Attapulgus Baptist Church with the Rev. Shelly Chandler officiating.
Interment followed in Attapulgus Baptist Church Cemetery with Ricky Brock, Sheldon Brock, Brent Tolar, John Brock and Dewey Brock serving as active pallbearers.
Born Feb. 13, 1943, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Bayides died on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
Mr. Bayides graduated from Attapulgus High School in 1960. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam as a captain, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.
He worked for the Savannah, Ga., Police Department for more than 20 years and had a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Armstrong State University in Savannah. He was employed as a postal clerk with the U.S. Post Office in Rincon, Ga., where he had lived for the past 18 years after moving from Savannah. He attended and loved the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church in Savannah. He coached Little League baseball during the 1980s and will always be remembered as “Coach J.”
Survivors include his wife, Norma Bayides of Rincon, Ga.; a son, John James Bayides III of Savannah; his father, John Bayides Sr. of Attapulgus; a daughter, Lynn Baumgartner of Savannah, and three grandchildren.
Cox-Ware Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
