7th-grade teams end seasons

The Bainbridge Middle School seventh-grade Lady Cats and Bearcats basketball teams completed their seasons Wednesday with victories of Cairo’s Washington Middle School seventh-grade Lady Tigers and Tigers at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum.

Coach Patrick Clark’s Lady Cats defeated the Lady Tigers 29-10 to finish with a 7-1 record.

Coach Heith Maxwell’s Bearcats downed the Tigers 42-33 to finish with a 6-2 mark.

Beonka Madge led the Lady Cats in scoring with 12 points. Breanna Butler added 6 and Kristin Baldwin put in 5.

Rounding out the winning scoring chart were Patra Parris with 4, and Longeisha Emanuel with 2.

Clark describes his team’s play Wednesday and throughout the season as great.

“These players gave me all they had on the court and in practice,” he said. “They are a special bunch who have that drive to succeed in this sport.”

Leading the way for Maxwell’s Bearcats on Wednesday were Jalin Belin with 14 and Chad Jenkins with 8. Belin’s big-scoring inning was the third when he scored 8 points on four field goals. He also had two field goals in the first quarter and one in the fourth quarter.

The Bearcats led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter, The Tigers bounced back to outscore them 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 15-12 halftime lead.

The Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, outscoring their Cairo visitors 17-10 to take a 29-25 lead entering the fourth quarter. They then scored 13 in the fourth quarter and held the Tigers to 8 to seal their victory.

Maxwell said he thought his Bearcats turned in a good performance Wednesday.

“We shot the ball well and came up with some good defensive stops when we needed them,” he said.

Also contributing to the Bearcats’ victory were Henry Kelly and Christian Green with 6 apiece, Greg Cooper with 3 and Maurice Davis with 2.
