Eugene Hammond

Funeral services for Eugene Hammond, 80, of Plainfield, N.J., formerly of Bainbridge, were held Nov. 24 at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe L. Sweet officiating.
Interment followed in Jonas Lobe Cemetery in Bainbridge with Mr. Hammond’s family and friends serving as active pallbearers.
Born May 17, 1929, in Bainbridge, Mr. Hammond died on Nov. 15, 2009, at JFK Hartwyck Nursing Home in Plainfield, N.J.
Mr. Hammond was retired from working as a machine operator for Johns Manville Corp. He joined Jordan Grove M.B. Church at an early age and was ordained as a deacon in 1946. In his younger years, he farmed and was a truck driver. He later moved to Plainfield, N.J., where he lived for more than 55 years. There, he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was an active member of King Hiram Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine Willis.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hammond of Camilla, Ga.; a daughter, Claudian Montford of South Plainfield, N.J.; a son, Rufus Hammond of Dover, Del.; two sisters, Mollissie Morris of Burlington, N.J., and Emma Bell of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; a sister-in-law, five brothers-in-law, five granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Bruton Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
