Lady Cats win one of three tournament

Coach Eugene Singletary’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats softball team won one of three games at this week’s Region 1AAAA Tournament at Upson-Lee High School in Thomaston to complete their 2009 season.

Going into the tournament as the No. 3 seed in Region 1AAAA South, the Lady Cats lost 14-1 Tuesday to the Harris County High School Lady Tigers, the No. 2 seed in Region 1AAAA North.

They bounced back later Tuesday to defeat the Hardaway High School Lady Golden Hawks of Columbus 7-6 and advance to Wednesday’s tournament final round.

The Thomas County Central High School Lady Yellow Jackets, a fellow Region 1AAAA South member, knocked them out of the tournament with a 7-0 Wednesday victory.

The Lady Cats lone run in their Tuesday loss to Harris County came in the third inning. With two away, right fielder Caitlyn Cato singled and came in on a triple by second baseman Kem Greene.

The big scoring inning for the Lady Cats in their Tuesday win over Hardaway was the fourth when they rallied for three runs.

The rally started with two away when first baseman Maegan Powell was safe on a fielder’s choice.

Big blow of the inning was a two-out double by pitcher Caitlyn Cato, who went all the way to pick up the victory.

Thomas County Central Lady Yellow Jackets senior right-hander Erin Vick pitched a complete game in her team’s 9-0 Wednesday victory over the Lady Cats.

Lady Cats shortstop Tiffany Hand singled with two away in the second for her team’s only hit.
