Learning how to fight fires

Approximately 50 firefighters trained Friday on how to fight a fire that may contain ethanol. In gasoline fires, firefighters can sometime put it out with water and an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) because water and gas don’t mix. However, if ethanol is present in a fire, throwing water or AFFF on it may make it worse because ethanol and water mix, said Tommy Johnson, district manager for Akron Brass Company that helped sponsor the training at the Cloud Livestock Arena. Firefighters were instructed to use alcohol-resistant AFFF.
