Bearcats, Seminoles, clash of unbeatens

It will be a battle of Region 1AAAA unbeatens Friday night when the Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Westside Macon Seminoles meet at 7:30 p.m. in Macon.

Both teams will enter the game with 4-0 overall records and 2-0 Region 1AAAA marks.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll, Westside Macon is ranked No. 4, and the Bainbridge is ranked No. 8.

The Seminoles, coached by first-year head coach Sheddrick Risper, are led by senior quarterback Cameron Jones, who has completed 27 of 46 passes for 414 yards and four touchdowns.

His top receiver is Ronald Carswell, who has caught 12 passes for 205 yards, a 17.1 yards per catch and three touchdown. He also has four punt returns for 60 yards and a touchdown and two kickoff returns for 38 yards.

The Seminoles second leading receiver is Rick Merritt, who has seven receptions for 110 yards, a 15.7 yards per catch average, and a touchdown.

The Seminoles, who have won their first four games by a 136-14 margin, have a strong ground game as well. Their leading ground gainer, Robert Brown has 99 carries for 780 yards, a 7.9 yards per carry average, and eight touchdowns.

Sharing the Seminoles’ rushing load with Brown has been Adrian Bentley, who has 33 carries for 283 yards, an 8.6 yards per carry average, and five touchdowns.

The Seminoles use a 4-3 alignment on defense. Four players—Carlos Cave, Marvin Jones, D.J. Green and Richard Nash—all have an interceptions. Cave returned his 28 yards for a touchdown.

In their most recent victory, a 27-7 Friday night win over the Jones County High School Greyhounds in Gray, the Seminoles were led by Brown, who had 23 carries for 231 yards and a touchdown.

Bentley, who had 11 carries for 82 yards, and Jones, who completed five of nine passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.
