Team Red are YMCA soccer champions

Team Red edged Team Black 4-3 on Aug. 3 to win this year’s Bainbridge-Decatur County YMCA summer adult league soccer championship.

The winning Team Red goal in the championship game was scored by Ken Harrell, who kicked the ball in the net after taking a pass from teammate Derek Morrison.

Team Red took the early 1-0 lead, but Team Black quickly came back to tie it up 1-1. It was a back-and-forth battle for bragging rights the rest of the way. With about five minutes remaining, the game was tied 3-3.

Team Red captain Trung Nguyen praised goal keeper Tevin Akins for being solid in goal all season.

“The combination of Tevin Akins goal tending, the tenacious defense of Zonato Ramirez and Jamie Ard, the speed of Antonio Butler and Mike Torrez and the timely goal scoring of Santos Son was just too much for most teams to overcome during the season and championship game,” Nguyen said. “We dominated our opponents.”

Team Black punched their ticket to the title game by knocking off Team Green Aug. 3. Team Red made it in by defeating Team White 5-4 in a thrilling penalty-kick decision. The game was tied 3-3 in regulation time.

Team Red and Team Black split their regular season head-to-head match-ups Team Red took the first game and Team Black bounced back to take the second game.
