Bainbridge High School freshman Shelby Gordon attended Young Scholars Institute on Arts and Humanities June 21-27 on the campus of the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga., along with 23 other students selected to attend.

Selection was based on academic performance in the classroom and on standardized tests, volunteer and community service involvement, and teacher references.

The Young Scholars Institute provides academically gifted students with a unique opportunity to learn in a challenging and fun-filled program designed to provide intellectual development and stimulation in a university environment.

Institute participants reside with professional, highly-trained staff in a university residence hall. University professors teach daytime classes in which students explore different disciplines in depth with evenings filled with social and recreational activities that promote interaction and friendships.

Classes for the week included computer animation, debate, creative writing and art.

The students demonstrated what they had learned during an end of week closing ceremony with parents and family.

Gordon is the daughter of Alicia and David Gordon of Bainbridge. This fall she will be marching with the Bainbridge High School marching band for the second year.
