The 2009-2010 Bainbridge High School basketball cheerleading squad, coached by Renae Lawson, learned the latest cheers, chants and dances at the United Cheerleaders Association (UCA) summer cheerleading camp at the University of Georgia.

The squad was privately coached by UCA instructors on a cheer and an “extreme” routine, which included a dance and other incorporated moves.

BHS basketball cheerleaders attending camp were Jasmine Belin, Alexis Flanders, Talisha Thomas, Latori Williams, Delnetra Miller, Hannah Brock, Porchia Green, Tiandria Burke, Shelby Miller, Ashley Toliver, Elleree Guy, Tara Smith, Charelle Barber and Jada Smith

They were evaluated on the material after each private coaching session. The evaluations were designed to help the squad get their material game ready. Daily awards were presented for achievement, improvement and spirit. Routines were judged on technique, originality and crowd appeal. The maximum length of a routine was a minute and 15 seconds.

Coach Lawson said she and her squad benefited greatly from the camp.

“The UCA camp program was designed to train cheerleaders to be their very best,” she said. “Each class was professionally conducted by top instructors. The overall emphasis of the program was on concentrated learning in a fun and exciting environment.”

All camp events were conducted under strict safety guidelines set forth by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators, Lawson said.

“I thought our routines were good and crisp, and I am proud of all the young ladies.”
