Five Bainbridge High School spring sport athletes have been named to “The Albany Herald’s” All-Area team.
Lady Cats junior soccer player Whitney Thomas, a first-team All-Region 1AAAA selection by the Region coaches and the team’s best offensive award winner, was named to the All-Area girls soccer team. She led coach Chip Ariail’s team in goals with 20 and was second in assists with five.
Senior Denzel Gamble of coach Larry Cosby’s Region 1AAAA champion Bearcats track team made the All-Area track team.
At the state Class AAAA meet in Jefferson, he finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, fifth in the triple jump and was a member of the third-place 4-by-400-meter relay team.
At the recent Bearcats track and field awards banquet at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum, Gamble was named most improved performer. His fifth-place, medal-winning time of 40.36 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles helped the Bearcats finish fifth in the state Class AAAA meet in Jefferson.
Two Bearcats soccer players, Tevin Akins and Keenan Adams, were named to the All-Area team as well.
Akins—a four-year starter as goal keeper, who played three years under coach Jamie Ard and one year under coach Brian McCorkle—received the top defensive player award at the recent soccer awards banquet. Sophomore Adams was named the most improved player.
Katie Monson of coach Nicki Shockley’s Lady Cats tennis team was named All-Area as well. She played No. 1 singles and helped lead her team to the Region 1AAAA championship and the Elite 8 round of the state Class AAAA tournament.
