Thirteen-year-old Daniel Provence, son of Dan and Bonnie Provence of Bainbridge, was a major contributor to the Valdosta Lowndes County Soccer Club’s run to the semifinal round of the National Presidents Cup Soccer Tournament last week in Greenville, S.C.

In the tournament, teams from 12 states in Region III, which comprises the southern part of the United States, were featured. It was participated in by boys and girls in the 13-, 14-, 15-, 16- and 17-year-old age groups.

The regional age group champions advanced to national championship Presidents Cup Tournaments, except for the 13-year-old age group. Teams do not go to a national tournament until they are in the 14-year-old group.

Provence saw action at left wing, right wing, left defensive cornerback and striker, and his team opened play with a 5-0 win over the South Carolina champions.

They followed their South Carolina victory with a 5-0 victory over Louisiana before dropping a tough 2-0 match to Tennessee.

In the semifinals, they lost 7-0 to North Carolina, which was seeded No. 1. South Texas, who was seeded No. 2, edged North Carolina 2-1 in the championship match. North Carolina, South Texas and Tennessee were the tournament’s top three seeds.

Provence, who was recruited from a North Florida All-Star team he was playing with, is the only player from Bainbridge on the Valdosta Lowndes County team.

There are also players on the team from Thomasville, Moultrie and Tifton.

Provence will be an eighth-grader at Bainbridge Middle School in the fall.
