On Tuesday, Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies and EMS responded to a report of a newborn baby being found inside a home at 265 Jacksontown Road.

Addie Jackson told Deputy Daryl Long she was at the home watching two young children. She said her niece and neighbor, 20-year-old Shamira Herring, left the home and went to the store. During that time, Jackson said she discovered a newborn baby laying on a bed in a room of the home, according to incident reports.

When Herring returned, she denied giving birth to the child. She told family members and police that a boy had brought the child to the home and that the boy said the child belonged to her cousin.

According to the report, Deputy Long spoke with an 11-year-old boy at the home that said he had seen Herring in the restroom of the home early that morning and saw blood in the bath tub area.

Herring was asked by officers to go the hospital with the child. While at the hospital she admitted to Sheriff’s Office investigators that she had given birth to the child.

On Wednesday, Investigator Redell Walton reported that the baby and Herring are in good health.

Walton said the incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Family and Children Services (DFACS) is also looking into the matter.
