What was once the Climax Parker Park Veteran Memorial committee, now the Decatur County Veteran’s Memorial committee announced that a dedication for the Veteran’s memorial now erected in Parker Park on Broad Street in Climax will be held on Saturday, May 16, beginning at 10 a.m. with a program and local veterans speaking.

Committee member Bubber Hester said this Memorial is to honor all veterans who have served in the military in all branches of the service, including those missing in action, killed in action or prisoners of war.

The memorial is inscribed with the words, “They all gave, Some gave all.” The insignias of all the branches of service are engraved on the memorial too. Flags of all the different branches of the military will also be displayed at the memorial along with the U.S. flag.

The memorial is to honor all veterans born in Decatur County or ones that have moved to Decatur County making this their home. It is located in Parker Park near the gazebo, and facing Broad Street.

Directly behind the memorial are pads where the bricks with the veteran’s name with three lines per brick, and 17 letters per line will be placed. While the price recommended in the beginning for a brick to honor a veteran was $100, it is now $60. Hester said this was changed to accommodate the change made in the memorial of what was once planned to be a much more expensive memorial.

At the dedication, bricks to honor Decatur County veterans will be available for purchase at this new price of $60 per brick with someone on hand to help with applications.
