Cats to compete in state meet

April Thomas of coach Tandria Phillips’ Bainbridge High School Lady Cats track team turned in an impressive time of 5 minutes, 35 seconds Friday in winning the 1,500-meter run at the Region 1AAAA meet at Westside Macon High School.

She will compete May 15 in the state Class AAAA meet at the Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium Track in Albany.

The remaining Region 1AAAA finals will be today at Westside Macon.

There are nine events left to be scored, and the Lady Cats have 15 entrants who are eligible to score points. The maximum number of entries a team can have is 18.

The Lady Cats tuned up for the Region 1AAAA meet April 17 with a strong effort in the Westover High School Lady Patriots and Patriots Relays in Albany.

They were led by Nancy Session, who won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 25.98 seconds and took second in the 400-meter run in a time of 59.49.

Other top finishers in Albany were Jerisha Sutton, who was third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.85, and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.35.

Session and Sutton were on the 4-by-100-meter relay team with Vanessa Jones and Shanika Gaines that finished sixth in a time of 50.95.

Khadejah Cooper sprinted home fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.38.

The top two individuals and relay teams in today’s Region 1AAAA finals will advance to the state Class AAAA meet May 15 and 16 . It will also be held at Albany’s Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium Track.

Coach Larry Cosby’s Region 1AAAA champion Bearcats track team will be in Jefferson Thursday, Friday and Saturday competing in the state Class AAAA meet.

Region 1AAAA meet medal winners who are competing include Eric Henry in the 300-meter run and the 4-by-100-meter and 4-by-400-meter relays; Sean Samuel in the 4-by-100-meter and 4-by-400-meter relays, and Denzel Reynolds in the 4-by-100-meter relay.

Also competing in Jefferson after qualifying at the Region 1AAAA meet in Macon are Marquis Williams in the 4-by-100-meter relay, Denzel Gamble in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump, and Dan Campbell in the 4-by-400-meter relay, the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

Rounding out the Bearcats Jefferson participants are Delonte Martistee in the high jump and triple jump, Octavious Scott in the 4-by-400-meter relay and the long jump, and Brandon Handsford in the 4-by-100-meter relay.
