Coach Tom Wheeler’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats and Bearcats golf teams carved themselves out a spot in school history this week by earning berths in the State Class AAAA tournament on Monday, May 4, in Dalton.
They are the first BHS boys and girls golf teams to go to the state tournament the same year.
Both teams secured their state tournament spots by finishing second in Monday and Tuesday’s Region 1AAAA tournament at Fort Benning in Columbus.
On Monday, the Lady Cats shot 188, just three strokes behind the first-place Lee County High School Lady Trojans. Sunnie Chason led the way with a 92, and Nicole Putnal shot 96.
In boys action on Tuesday, the Bearcats shot 342. They were led by Tanner Walker with an 80. Walker was followed by Michael Fleming with an 83, Colby Moore with an 85 and Shaun Gaskins with a 94.
The Lee County Trojans, led by low-medalist Nate Gahman with a 74, finished first in the boys tournament with a 321.
Wheeler said the Region 1AAAA tournament was very competitive, particularly in the girls division.
“There were four teams within five strokes of each other for second place in the girls division,” he said.
