Funeral services for Mellie Byrd Smart, 96, of Midway, Fla., will be today, April 18, beginning at 11 a.m. at Mount Moriah No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church in Climax.

Interment will follow at Conyers Cemetery in Climax with Robert Johnson, Michael Peters, Alonza Brown Jr., Larry Johnson, Jerome Johnson and Andre Patterson serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Travis Brown, Victor Moore Jr., K.C. Johnson, Antron Johnson and Alphonso Johnson.

Born in Decatur County on Dec. 25, 1912, Mrs. Smart died on April 10, 2009, following a long illness. She was a member of Mount Moriah No. 1 M.B. Church. Mrs. Smart was retired as an aide from Sunland Hospital. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toole Smart.

She is survived by two daughters, Estella Johnson of Midway, Fla., and Henrietta Oliver of Birmingham, Ala.; 23 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, 45 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
