Coach Brian McCorkle’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats soccer team dropped a 1-0 Region 1AAAA Friday road match to the Thomas County Central High School Yellow Jackets, bringing their 2009 regular season to an end.

The Bearcats are 11-2 overall and 5-1 and in second place, just one behind the Yellow Jackets in Region 1AAAA.

Friday’s match, a makeup of a March 26th rainout, was a true defensive battle. It was not decided until the 78th minute when the Yellow Jackets finally broke the scoring ice.

The Yellow Jackets’ Montavious Diaz scored the winning goal. He took a pass, dribbled to his left and left footed the ball into the net.

Diaz had several other shots on goal, but Bearcats goal keeper Tevin Akins, who had an outstanding match, turned them away.

The Bearcats had a chance to tie it up late, but Yellow Jackets goal keeper Brian Jensen turned back a free penalty kick in front of the net.

When the two teams met on March 3 in Bainbridge, the Bearcats downed the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in a match decided by a 3-2 shootout penalty kick advantage following two overtime periods.

In the Centennial Field match, midfielder Hal Clement opened the Bearcats scoring with a left-footed kick into the back of the net from 15 yards away. Senior Michael Torres kicked in the winning overtime goal.
