Carlos Villa, outreach coordinator for the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, conducted an electromagnet workshop for fifth-graders at Elcan-King Elementary School on March 2. Students discussed the principles and properties of magnets, learned how magnets are used and recognized the importance of magnet research. Students had fun as they were challenged to work in groups to create and test their own electromagnets. In addition to providing educational outreach programs to schools in a seven-county area, the in-house research at the Magnet Lab helps set research trends and provides leadership for experimental and theoretical research in magnetic materials and phenomena.
