A young girl riding her bicycle was hit by a car at around 6 p.m. Thursday evening in Bainbridge.

The driver of the passenger vehicle that struck the young girl, 19-year-old Kicia Gaines, said she was driving east on College Street when a girl on a bicycle attempted to cross the street where the road intersects with Monroe Street. The driver slammed on her brakes and veered into the oncoming lane of traffic in an attempt to miss the girl, as was apparent from the approximately 20 feet of skid marks seen of the roadway.

When the car hit the girl, she rolled onto the hood of the car.

The young girl suffered a leg injury in the accident and was transported to the hospital by EMS.

Gaines and other witnesses said the girl never slowed down as she attempted to ride through the intersection, traveling down Monroe Street.

Officers at the scene said the young girl was very lucky that the driver was alert and slammed on her brakes or her injuries could have been much worse.
