Congratulations to coach Latreisha Moon, coach Rickey McCullough and their Bainbridge High School Lady Cats and Bearcats basketball teams on winning Region 1AAAA championships.

Their victories over the Westside Macon High School Lady Seminoles and Seminoles in Saturday night’s Region 1AAAA Tournament championship games at the Decatur County Memorial Coliseum were just two of many outstanding accomplishments for the two teams this season.

Both had great late season runs on the way to their championships. The Lady Cats have won 13 in a row, and the Bearcats have won 15 in a row. They each went a perfect 6-0 to win the regular season Region 1AAAA South Sub-Region championship.

The Lady Cats had a big effort on the way to finishing third in the 2008 Dothan, Ala., High School Invitational Tournament over the holidays.

During the tournament, they were dominating in a 101-58 victory over the Sneads, Fla., High School Lady Tigers as Alexis Burke scored a game-high 21 points. Also in double figures were April Thomas with 17, Zaikia Dawson with 15 and Bria Harris with 11.

One of the many highlights of the season for the Bearcats came when Marquis Williams hit a school-record 10 3-point shots during their final regular season home game against the Lee County High School Trojans. The Bearcats beat the Trojans 100-56, and Williams finished with a game-high 32 points. Another highlight of the Bearcats season was winning the 2008 Maclay High School Holiday Hoops Tournament in Tallahassee, Melzie Johnson winning the tournament’s most valuable player award and Marquis Williams being named to the All-Tournament team.

Congratulations Bearcats and Lady Cats. Your talents and hard working are rightfully being rewarded.
