Thomas hat trick leads the way
Junior forward Whitney Thomas had a three-goal hat trick Friday at Centennial Field, leading coach Chip Ariail’s Bainbridge High School Lady Cats soccer team to a 3-1 victory.
The win improved the Lady Cats season record to 2-0.
The Lady Cats went ahead 1-0 when Thomas kicked in a shot from 6 yards out despite pressure from the Lady Rebels goal keeper. Senior midfielder Olivia Reynolds assisted on the goal.
The Lady Rebels tied it up 1-1 with just a minute remaining in the half. The tying goal came from 2 yards out following a crossing pass to the left side.
The Lady Cats went ahead to stay 2-1 in the 70th minute when Thomas received a pass from Reynolds at the top of the penalty area, dribbled her way through four defenders, and hit a crossing shot to the left post.
Thomas completed her hat trick in the 76th minute when she scored on a penalty kick to the left post.
The penalty kick was awarded after a Lady Rebel defender was charged with a hand ball as she tried to clear the ball.
Ariail thought his team played well Friday despite being a little short handed.
“We still are not at 100 percent,” Ariail said. “Two starters were not able to play due to various ailments, but I thought we played hard. Thomas, Reynolds, midfielder Bailey Wells and defenders Capria Miller and Ashley Thomas all played well.”
