Senior Marquis Williams set a Bainbridge High School record for most 3-pointers in a game to lead the Bearcats to a 100-56 Region 1-AAAA home victory over the Lee County High School Trojans Tuesday night.
Williams hit 10 3-point shots and finished with a game-high 32 points in the win. He brroke the record of the late Byron Willingham who hit 9 3-point shots in a 1999-2000 game.
The hundredth point came on a layup by Shawn Samuels with the crowd cheering as time ran down.
The game was the last of the regular season. Prior to the game, senior basketball players and cheerleaders were honored with their parents.
The Bearcats took command early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Williams opened the scoring with a 3-point jumper from the right side just eight seconds into the game.
Williams gave the Bearcats their first double-digit lead when he swished home a 3-pointer from the left side with 3:06 left in the first quarter to put them up 24-12. They led 26-22 at the end of the quarter.
The Bearcats continued to build their lead in the second quarter. A 3-pointer from the right baseline by James Lodman Jr. and a free throw by Melzie Johnson took the Bearcats to halftime with a 41-31 lead.
Adding to Williams’ record-setting performance were Antroine Williford with 12, Melzie Johnson with 9 and Samuels, Justin Harris and Devon Baulkman with 7 each.
Rounding out the Bearcats’ scoring chart were Lodman with 5, Rodney Glenn, John Turner and James Hudson all with 3, and Rohan Gaines with 2.
“We had a real team effort tonight,” McCullough said after the game. “It was nice that Marquis Williams’ recording-setting scoring night came on senior night.”
