A 16-year-old boy died Wednesday evening after being struck by an oncoming train.
The boy, Montravious Jones, was crossing the railroad in the area of Hutto-McIver Apartment at around 6 p.m.
Several people in the area who knew the young man said they believed the boy to be deaf. They said he may have been traveling to his home located on the west side of the tracks.
The train conductor said the train was traveling 25 miles per hour when the boy walked out in front of the lead car of the train. It took approximately 300 yards, or 10 train cars, for the train to come to a stop.
The boy suffered trauma and lacerations to his head and face as well as a leg injury, but was conscious as he was placed on a stretcher and his leg secured in a splint by EMS personnel. The boy was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital by air medical transport where he died from his injuries.
