Students in Kelly Whitehead’s first-grade class at Elcan-King Elementary School planted a small fall vegetable garden. The class recently harvested some of their crops, which included carrots, broccoli, onions, kale, turnips, rutabagas, spinach and radishes. The class has used the garden to encompass teaching in all subject areas as they monitor needs and growth of the plants. They also spent time tracking and graphing soil, climate and weather conditions and its effect on the crops and journaling their findings. The class looks forward to a spring vegetable garden.
