The seventh- and eighth-grade U.S. History class taught by Merreann McDonald recently visited St. Augustine, Fla., on a quest to see first hand what the first European settlement in America was all about.

Twenty-two students enjoyed this break from the traditional classroom to see, experience, learn and enjoy this part of our nation that is so rich in American history.

During their time in St. Augustine, the students visited many educational and historical sites, as well as a few fun stops along the way.

The first stop on the tour was at the St. Augustine Visitor Information Center where students were greeted by a tour guide, who accompanied them for the next couple of days.

While at the center, students were able to see a building material called “coquina,” which was first used to build the national landmark, Castillo de San Marco.

The students then toured many other sites, which included Memorial Presbyterian Church; Flagler College, formerly, The Ponce de Leon Hotel built by Henry Flagler; Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, St. Augustine Lighthouse, The Oldest House, The Spanish Military Hospital, Castillo de San Marco, Mission of Nombre de Dios, the City Gates, a trolley tour of the city, and an evening walking tour.

The students really embraced this educational opportunity and “soaked” in so much information. They were so thankful for this opportunity.
