First-grade students in Lynn Watts’ and Gabriela Velasquez’s class at West Bainbridge Elementary School helped put books in the hands of kids in need— simply by reading themselves. The students, along with students all across the country involved in the ClassroomCare program, read 100 books and, in turn, Scholastic Book Clubs, a global children’s publishing and media company, will donate 1 million new books to disadvantaged children nationwide. The students in Watts’ class voted to donate their share of books to the Rebekah Children’s Services in California, which is dedicated to promoting social, emotional and physical well-being of children and families.
