Leitz, Harrell Memorial Day Run winners

Gabriel Leitz of Tallahassee, Fla. and Perra Harrell of Bainbridge were the male and female winners of Monday’s fourth annual 5,000-meter, 3.1-mile Memorial Day Night Race sponsored by Coach Mandi O’Mara’s Bainbridge High Bearcats and Lady Cats cross country teams.

Leitz was the overall winner of the run, which started and ended at W.M. Coyle Park, with a time of 17:34.39. He topped a 90 runner field.

Harrell was the female winner. She was 19th overall with a time of 23 minutes, 1.28 seconds. She was recently named rookie runner of the year with the Grace Christian Academy Lady Cougars cross country team.

A special award, in honor of Memorial Day, was given to U.S, Marine Corps veteran Michael Kennett of Tallahassee, Fla. who was the top military finisher. He was third overall with a time of 19 minutes, 0.82 seconds.

Official starter of the run was U.S. Army veteran and former Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats cross country coach Roy Zimmerman.

The top Bainbridge finisher was Greg Waddell, who was fifth overall with a time of 19 minutes, 28.42 seconds.

Harold Martin, a senior member of the Bainbridge High School Bearcats cross country team, who recently signed a cross country scholarship with Darton College in Albany, was sixth with a time of 20 minutes, 43.22 seconds.

Nine-year-old Caleb Harris of Bainbridge captured 11th overall with a time of 21 minutes, 53.67 seconds. His brother Chase Harris was 17th with a time of 22 minutes 39.26 seconds.
