Bearcats stung by Hornets, claw Tigers

The Bainbridge High School Bearcats baseball team downed the Dothan High School Tigers 7-1 Monday in Dothan, Alabama.

They returned to action Tuesday hosting the Crisp County High School Cougars in a Region 1-AAAA game at the Bearcat Diamond.

They will travel to Albany Monday April 6 for a 5:30 p.m. Region 1-AAAA game against the Westover High School Patriots.

The Bearcats’ big scoring inning was the top of the fourth when they rallied for three runs to go up 6-0. Big blows in the inning were an RBI single by Anderson Bailey and an RBI double by Carson Inlow. Stanton Long got a run home with a ground out.

The Bearcats took an early 3-0 lead with one in the first and two in the second.

First baseman Seth Hall opened the second with a single and came home on an RBI double by Hayden Godwin who then came home on an RBI single by Anderson Bailey. Hayden Godwin opened the second with a double,

Right-handers Russell Wheeler Cayden McQuaig both saw duty on the mound for the Bearcats. Wheeler gave up just four hits, one run and went 1-for-3 at the plate. McQuaig gave up just one hit and did not allow an earned run.

Last Friday, the Bearcats dropped an 8-3 decision to the Cook County Hornets at the Bearcat Diamond.

The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead over the Hornets Friday in the bottom of the first. Left fielder Carson Inlow opened the inning with a hard ground single to left. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Catcher Blake Merchant drove him in with an RBI double to right. Merchant came around with the second run when first baseman Seth Hall was safe on a throwing error.

The Bearcats threatened again in the bottom of the second. Right fielder Anderson Bailey opened the inning with a looping single to left and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Strickland before being stranded.

The Hornets scored two to pull even 2-2 in the top of the third. Hunter Folsome singled to left to open the inning, and was forced at second on a grounder to short by Conner Hilyard. Hilyard moved up to second on a single to center by Gunner George. Lane Folsome was safe on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Hilyard came in with the first on a fielder’s choice and George came in with the tying run on a single by Hayden Mitchell.

The Hornets scored five more in the top of the fourth to go up 7-2. Brock Jones walked on a 3-2 pitch to open the inning and moved up to second on a single by Joe Anderson. Both runners came around to score when Hunter Folsome was safe on a throwing error to put the Hornets up 4-2. Folsome moved up to second and third on a single and a fielder’s choice and came in on an error with the fifth run. Another error and a fielder’s choice got the sixth and seventh runs across.

A one-out double by Joe Anderson and a two-out RBI single to left by Comer Higdon in the bottom of the fifth got the Hornets eighth run across.

The Bearcats plated their final run in the top of the sixth. Third baseman Will Kelley opened the inning with a single to center and catcher Blake Merchant, who went 3-for-3 on the day, followed with a single to right moving him up to second. After first baseman Seth Hall walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases, right fielder Anderson Bailey grounded out second to first to get Kelley across.

The Bearcats returned to Region 1-AAAA play Tuesday with a home Region 1-AAAA game against the Crisp County High School Cougars.
