Tonight, four new members will be inducted into the Decatur County Sports Hall of Fame. This is tremendous achievement for those four people, who will be honored during a 6 p.m. ceremony at the Bainbridge State College’s Kirbo Center.

These four individuals are Carol Chason Whitmire, who was a standout basketball player at Valdosta State University and later went on to coach at the University of Florida; Ben Rogers, an offensive and defensive lineman for Bainbridge High School in the 1950s, who later served as head basketball coach at Middle Georgia College; Ed Varner, a BHS running back who starred in track and football at Georgia Tech in the 1960s; and our own Joe Crine, who has been the sports editor at The Post-Searchlight for 42 years.

Thanks to the Decatur County Sports Hall of Fame’s board of directors for their hard work on this event. Congratulations to these four deserving sports legends, on their induction into the third class of the Decatur County Sports Hall of Fame.
