Below-freezing temperatures haven’t kept the Decatur County 4-H Show Team members from doing what they do best – excelling at livestock shows.  Maci Lynn, Grace Christian Academy 4-H’er, recently competed in the National Junior Swine Association Winter National, held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia.

The NJSA Winter National was held in Perry, Georgia beginning January 14 and concluding January 18 and is sponsored by the National Junior Swine Association.  There were over 750 entries from exhibitors representing more than 15 states.  Exhibitors must exhibit a registered gilt or barrow to participate in the show.  Students are also challenged by testing their general swine knowledge in the skill-a-thon.  Students enjoy many leadership components as well as having the opportunity to meet other students from across the United States.

Maci Lynn was named Reserve Grand Champion Crossbred Breeding Gilt with her gilt called Barbie.  Additionally, Maci was named Reserve Champion Division and Reserve Champion Dark Cross Gilt.

As a result of their participation, youth gain character traits including responsibility, caring, and fairness among others, and certainly the reward of hard work and dedication.  In addition, they practice numerous life skills including teamwork, self-motivation, self-esteem, critical thinking, decision making, goal setting, cooperation, and communication.

The mission of the Georgia 4-H and FFA youth livestock program is to provide opportunities to develop life skills and provide learning opportunities for our youth.
