For those wanting to do something more with their mother for Mother’s Day (or those perhaps looking for a last-minute gift), the Firehouse Art Gallery may have something. While not officially beginning on Mother’s Day, starting next Tuesday, May 16, the Firehouse will be offering 4-day “Intro to Crochet” class. The class will span two weeks, with two classes per week. All necessary materials will be provided by the Firehouse, with an entry fee of $70 for all four classes. The classes will be taught by BHS art teacher Rebecca Cole and her mother Carolyn Long.

While the Firehouse has offered knitting classes before, this is the first crochet class it will provide. “The knitting class was very well received,” Firehouse executive director Jessica Polsky said, “and it’s actually a good time to start learning to make projects for the fall.” She continued, “It would be really fun for mothers and daughters to do together, since Mother’s Day is coming up, or girlfriends, you know anything like that.”

Aside from the crochet class, the Firehouse will be holding a “Royal tea party” event in June, an event that according to Polsky was “inspired by the recent crowning of the King.” Aside from tea and scones, live music will be provided, and a floral arrangement contest for attendees to vote on will also be there. “It’s very much a lady’s luncheon type of experience,” Polsky said.

On the crochet class, she added, “Learning to create, and learning new things, really helps everybody, and it’s kind of a way to relax. So I encourage people that have been stressed out, moms, teachers, anyone stressed out that needs a way to zone out, I encourage you to learn how to crochet or knit, it’s a great way to do that.”
