As his time with the Decatur County School System winds down, Superintendent Time Cochran received a commendation for his work by Governor Brian Kemp last week. This is the second commendation Cochran has received from Kemp, having received one last year as well.

Cochran has served on the governor’s education advisory board since it began at Kemp’s election. “He just congratulated me, he knew I was leaving and moving to North Georgia RESA, and so he was just recognizing me for my years of service as superintendent,” Cochran explained. This latest commendation specifically recognizes Cochran for serving as Decatur County’s superintendent since 2016; for his service with the Georgia School Superintendents Association, including his time as president; as well as his service not just to K-12 students in Decatur County, but also SRTC students during his time on the SRTC Board of Directors.

During his time on the advisory board, he was able to secure grant funding for school safety, as well as extra funding for counselors. “When you get two out of three at a legislative session, that’s pretty good, and that’s directly tied to our lobbying and our ties to the governor’s office,” Cochran said. “I’m just appreciative of his relationship. We’ve not always agreed, and we don’t always see eye to eye, but it’s just really refreshing to have a seat at the table.”

Cochran stated that, despite leaving his position as superintendent, he would still be willing to work on the governor’s advisory board after his move North Georgia RESA. “I’m appreciative of his support, appreciative of his recognition,” Cochran said, “and really thankful for my time and my service, not just to Decatur County, but all the public schools I’ve served, it’s been a rewarding career thus far.”
