Work on the Chason Park expansion project is well underway, with a projected completion date of this July. One large part of the project is the three-story residential building currently under construction. According to Doug Young, owner of PDC Construction, when completed, there will be 21 condos available, with each floor having five 2-bedroom, 2-bath spaces, and two 1-bed, 1-bath spaces, with a handicap accessible one on the ground floor. In addition, there will be a lounge area on the rooftop. “I think the project’s coming together really nicely,” Young said. “It’s going as fast as it can in today’s economy.” Young clarified, stating that there had been several supply chain issues that had affected construction, with an electrical switch gear package currently not set to arrive until June.

City manager Chris Hobby spoke with the Post-Searchlight about the condo project, as well as the Chason Park project in general. “Right now they anticipate early July project completion,” he said of the condos. “They’ve started hanging sheetrock, so they’re well over halfway through with the project. Which will coincide with when we are planning to open the park, which is also early July.” He elaborated on the park construction in general, saying, “A lot of the work that we’ve been doing preliminarily has been underground, so it’s not all that visible, but now I think you’re gonna start seeing things becoming vertical.”

The project has seen some changes along the way; when first proposed, there were plans for first-floor retail space. “But the council brought up that they were concerned about that retail competing with downtown, and so that became an area of discussion with the developer,” Hobby said. “Then Doug and Darrell ultimately decided it would work better, from a cash flow basis, if it was just three floors of residential.” He hopes to have the park done by early July, potentially July 4, “So, you know, folks will have time this summer to enjoy the splash pad and the other things.”

Hobby concluded saying, “We’re really pleased with the progress on the project, both the private side and the public side. We always have felt like public investment would be followed by private investment, and that’s what we’re beginning to see, and we’re pleased with that.”
