Judy “Monk-Monk” Powell, 80, of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, January 20, 2023.

The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Cloud officiating.  Interment followed at Roselawn Memory Gardens with Dennie Powell, Kason Hebert, Joey McMillan, Gerald White, Tony Wells, and Roger Keaton serving as active pallbearers.

The family received friends prior to the service from 10:00-10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.bryantfuneralga.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bainbridge-Decatur County Humane Society, 1250 Cox Avenue, Bainbridge, GA 39819.

Julia Anice Thomas was born August 2, 1942, in Bainbridge, Ga., the daughter of Gordon & Louise Hill Thomas. She was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1962. The summer after graduation, Judy married the love of her life, Melvin E. “Gene” Powell, and they made their home in Bainbridge. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Judy was a collector of many things. She loved magazines and cookbooks, ceramics, crafts, flowers, and animals. She enjoyed church gatherings, road trips, and the beach, but she loved shopping. Judy was a good cook, and no one could match her fried chicken, turnip greens, and dressing. She had a sweet tooth and really could never give you one thing she liked more than others…she enjoyed ALL sweets. Rarely did you see Judy without Gene, especially if she was visiting one of her two favorite places, Wal-Mart and Port City Seafood (Hole in the Wall).

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Melvin E. “Gene” Powell; her children, Sheila McMillan (Joey) and Lisa Faircloth, all of Bainbridge, and Teresa Powell Hebert of Hiram; her grandchildren, Aaron (Cristy), Kason (Lexi), and Bailey; her great-grandchild, Mallorie; and her siblings, Frances Gay (Lindsay), Richard McConnell, and Debbie Chocola. In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Wayne B. “Buddy” Faircloth.
