Rather than having their usual lunch meeting, members of the Bainbridge Rotary Club met in the Board of Education cafeteria on Tuesday to pack bagged lunches for students in need.

Stephanie Poitevint, Decatur County school psychologist, oversaw the program. “Any student that is referred by their classroom teacher, or a parent can reach out to their school counselor or administrator for referral,” she explained, “they fill out a form, and the parent has to give consent for the program.”

She continued, “It is based on someone that may not have food on the weekends at home, so all of our items are easily accessible for children to open and fix themselves.” Items packed in the bags include cans of Campbell’s soup, Chef Boyardee ravioli, ramen noodles, instant grits, applesauce and granola bars.

According to Poitevint, the program has been doing this program for at least 15 years. All meals are of course, free to the kids. This year marked the first time, to Poitevint’s knowledge, that Rotary has helped pack these meals.
