Lawrence Shivers was born on October 24, 1939, in Bainbridge, Georgia to the late George and Bennie Shivers. He was the oldest of three siblings and the families only surviving son. His sister, Bettie Jane Frazier, preceded him in death.

His mother strongly encouraged education. Lawrence received his Bachelor’s Degree from Fort Valley State College in Georgia, Master’s Degree from Vander Cook College of Music, and a Master of Education from the University of Michigan.

Lawrence began his career as an educator in Illinois where he met Portia Dobyne. They were united in holy matrimony on August 15, 1965. They were the proud, happy parents of twins: Christopher and Patrick. They later relocated to Detroit, where he taught band in the Detroit Public Schools District. He found great joy and inspiration in music. After more than 37 years of teaching, he retired but continued his love of music by playing his trumpet and performing in bands throughout the community. He also loved nature and fishing was his greatest past time. He enjoyed spending time with his friends on the boat cruising the lakes and rivers of Detroit.
