US Highway 27 was closed to north and southbound vehicles on Tuesday night for several hours.

A mother and her child died Tuesday in a single-car traffic incident when, according to witnesses, the driver lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the road. The wreck occurred in the area of Cook-Womack Road in Decatur County.

According to Georgia State Patrol, at approximately 6:30 pm, the vehicle, traveling northbound on US Highway 27, left the road and struck a tree. Trooper Ford of GSP told The Post-Searchlight, “the investigation is ongoing, but at present we beleive speed was a significant factor.”

Due to the severity of the incident, US Highway 27 was closed to both south and northbound traffic for several hours Tuesday night as GSP, DCSO, and other local public safety officers responded.

The female driver of the vehicle and one juvenile passenger perished at the site, and a third passenger, also a juvenile, suffered from severe burns. The child was life-flighted to a hospital in Florida and is in critical condition. The victims were residents of Florida.
