George Lester Singleton was born May 12, 1930, in Mitchell County, Ga., the son of James & Georgia Dean Singleton. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Fechteler DD870. He married Jewel Humphries in 1951, and they made their home in Decatur County. George worked as a millwright and welder for Englehard and later Sellers Oil Co. He was a member of Climax Baptist Church.

George enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. It was evident in every conversation that family was important and brought him much joy. He loved “bird hunting” and traveling to the mountains. George was a gentle giant who believed you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. He shared his experiences and wisdom with his children & grandchildren never fully realizing his impact. Generations will benefit from his legacy of love and integrity.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Jewel Humphries Singleton; his children, Don Singleton of Climax, Debra & Russell Jones of Slocumb, Ala., and Derry & Phyllis Singleton of Tifton, Ga.; his grandchildren, Heather & Matt, Dana & Broc, Chance & Taylor, Mollie & Rick, Lauren & Cal, and Austin; and his nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his siblings, Edward Singleton and Louise S. Reynolds.
