Cars lined up along Hall St. and beyond last Friday and Saturday for a charity supply drop put on by Spokes of Hope and Hands Across the Border. Palettes of supplies and toiletries, from toothpaste and paper towels, to diapers and masks, were unloaded and distributed to people.

The charity event was organized by Bainbridge resident Liz Tomlin and her son, Dwight, who delivered the supplies all the way from South Carolina. Dwight, currently a member of the Horry County Police Department in South Carolina, spoke with the Post-Searchlight about the delivery. According to him, the supplies came from the National Disaster Center warehouse, with roughly 48 palettes worth a total of $90,000. There were no items wasted or left over, with the pick-up line extending across Shotwell Street, “They had to redirect traffic there were so many people,” Dwight said.

Dwight was the representative for Hands Across the Border, and worked with local law enforcement (both BPS and DCSO) to direct traffic, as well as to guard the truck Friday night. “Hands Across the Border is a law enforcement initiative to meet the needs of communities that are in need,” he said. “It’s bridging the gap between communities and law enforcement.”

Liz represented Spokes of Hope, who provided the truck for the delivery. “We want to make the city a better place, and if we work together, we can accomplish those goals.” She went on to thank the volunteers that participated.

Another charity drive is tentatively planned for this November.
