On Saturday, August 13, the 5K Run & Walk for Diabetes Awareness is being held at the Earle May Boat Basin. This is the second year the run is being held, but the first year it is being hosted at the boat basin.

After weeks of planning and help from community members, city council leaders and businesses, advisor Brian Johnson got the okay and started to work immediately. Johnson decided on the boat basin venue because of the size and visibility to the community.

“We wanted to have it at the boat basin because it is a place in Bainbridge that everybody knows and goes to on a regular basis with their family,” said Johnson. “That was a big deciding factor when finding a venue was the visibility to the community.”

The proceeds raised at the run will go to the American Diabetes Association to assist with research, funding and other community services. This cause is especially important to Johnson, because diabetes is a disease that has not only affected his family, but the entire section of southwest Georgia.

“Our family was a driving force because a number of our family members have been affected by type one and type two,” said Johnson. “What a lot of people don’t know is that out of all the sections in the state of Georgia, the southwest Georgia community is the largest section affected by diabetes.”

At the run, Johnson is excited to spread awareness about diabetes and also help educate people on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

“There’s going to be a lot of great information at the run,” said Johnson. “We’re going to have pamphlets, signs and all kinds of visuals to educate people about diabetes and ways to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Even for people who aren’t runners or are intimidated about running marathons, there are still many reasons to come out and options for everybody including a mile walk for those who are unable to run.

“Coming out is a win-win situation for everyone,” said Johnson. “You’re advocating for yourself and showing a willingness to not only learn, but live a healthier lifestyle. It also shows a willingness to help others and educate the world.”

Being able to have the event in Johnson’s hometown is special for him because of the support he has from his family and friends and also is an opportunity to build new relationships.
