As thunderclouds gathered overhead, a crowd also gathered at Parker Park in Climax on Tuesday afternoon to celebrate Flag Day. Despite the rainy weather, the patriotic community golf cart parade was still held, with Representative Darlene Taylor judging Spencer Blanton as having the best decorated cart. Music was provided by both Caliber Band, as well as Somethin’ Else. With it being Flag Day, the BHS JROTC was also present to retire the city’s old flags and replace them.

Climax Mayor Joseph Kelly spoke to the Post-Searchlight about the festivities. “We have been preparing for about three months,” he said. “I reached out to Mrs. Darlene Taylor first. Once she confirmed, the ball started rolling… I asked Caliber Band to perform at the event since they had been at our other events like the Classic Car Show and the Grand Ole Opry. Katie Floyd, a resident of Climax and member of Somethin’ Else, reached out to me about her band playing at the event too.”

According to Kelly, Jeff Rich with Country Financial sponsored the event. Paul Fryer, field rep for Sanford Bishop, participated in the parade, while city council members helped with the main presentation, and the volunteer fire department directed traffic.

“It truly was a community event in which all of the community came together to put it on,” Kelly said. “Community feedback has been very positive. Folks have told me how appreciative and happy they are for our little ole community to host such amazing events.”

The mayor encouraged people to continue to support these events, concluding by saying, “Y’all go ahead and make plans to join us next year!”
