Funeral services for Dr. Eugene Talmadge Maddox, 88, of Cairo, Ga., are at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church, Cairo, Ga. Rev. Christy Bandy, Dr. Jimmy Clanton and Todd Maddox will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, Ga. Dr. Maddox passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Ga., on Friday, June 3, 2022.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Graham, Dr. Clifford Bailey, Dr. Alex Greenberg, James Willis, Johnny Mac Butler, Wayne Hadden, Jet Cox and Carter Morton. Honorary pallbearers will be Prentiss Mitchell, Russell Smith, Palmer Rich, Hugh Lee O’Neil, John Bulloch, Buddy Mitchell, Frank Pritchett, Ron Sellers, Sammy Perkins, James Brock, Chuck Stafford, David Poole, Dr. Bo Curles, Ellis Brock, Frank Jones, Harry Young, Bill Hester, Buster Bell, Elsie Jones, Charlie Norton, Caylor Outz, Dick Porter, Roy Jones, Randall Jones, Sam Carnline, Shawn Mobley, Bob Taylor, Carey VanLandingham, Wayne Tootle, Wayne Windham, Charles Coker, Wayne Fincher and Charles Manny.

Dr. Maddox was born on May 24, 1934, in Jackson, Ga., to the late Albert Forest Maddox and Sara Pritchett Maddox. He graduated from ABAC in 1954. On June 6, 1954, he married Patsy Copeland Maddox of Tifton, Ga., who survives. He received his veterinary degree in 1959 from the University of Georgia. Then he lived in Thomasville, Ga., and worked for Dr. Roland Clanton at Clanton Veterinary Hospital. In June of 1963, he founded Cairo Animal Hospital and served Grady and surrounding counties until his retirement from active veterinary medicine to serve as a Georgia State Representative for Grady and Decatur County. He served until 2012 and then returned to practice veterinary medicine for Dr. Cliff Bailey at Port City Animal Hospital. In 2006, he was honored by the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association as Veterinarian of the Year. In 2015, he received the J.T. Mercer Lifetime Achievement Award. He was honored with the naming of a length of Highway 112 in 2018 with his name. He was a member of the Cairo First United Methodist Church, the American Veterinary Medical Association (serving as President), The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (serving as President), the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association and the Whigham Community Club. He served as Chief Veterinary Medical Examiner under four governors during his career.

Survivors include: his wife, Patsy Maddox of Cairo, Ga.; sons, Stanley Maddox (Pam) of Thomasville, Ga., Steven Maddox (Shelia) of Huntersville, N.C., Todd Maddox (Kathy) of Tallahassee, Fla., Pat Maddox of Cairo, Ga.; grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Samuel, Jody, Steven, Kyle, Dylan, David, Taylor, Christina; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Drew, Beau, Liliana, Holly, Wayne; and a brother, Dulane Maddox of Jackson, Ga.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his great-granddaughter, Haven; and a brother, Barry Maddox.

The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
