The BHS BassCats had a successful weekend, with four teams traveling north to compete in the GHSA state championship on Clarks Hill Lake. Among those four teams were Gage Sellars and Brock Lewis, Tyler Godwin and Caden Godwin, Cy Taunton and John David Bell, and Bowynn Brown and Shane Dill, with Brown and Dill being declared state champions.

There were 129 boats on the water that day, with teams launching at safe light, though according to Coach Roy Matthews, there was a near 3-hour delay in launch time due to fog. This pushed the actual start time to 9:00 AM, with the weigh-in set for 3:00 that afternoon. Brown and Dill caught the five fish limit, with a total weight of 17.12 pounds.

This tournament brought an end to the GHSA season, though the BassCats are hardly done yet. The teams of Brown and Dill and the Godwins will be traveling to Lake Hartwell on June 3-4 for a GA BASS championship. Meanwhile, Sellars and Lewis, as well as the junior team of Brennan Enfinger and Corbyn Thompson, will be competing in a FL BASS championship from June 11-12, on the St John’s River.

Coach Matthews told the Post-Searchlight in a statement, “Nine years ago we started Bass Fishing as a program at Bainbridge High School, and the credit goes to the dedication of the student anglers and the work they put in to be successful in the sport, as well as the support of their parents, who are traveling all over the state, helping these anglers be the best they possibly can.”
