The Bainbridge Bearcats Golf Team traveled to the Area Tournament on April 26, where both the Lady Cats and Bearcats were crowned Region 1-AAAA champions. The Bearcats also claimed 2nd in the Area Tournament, while the Lady Cats claimed 3rd, allowing them to both qualify for the GHSA State Championship in Perry on May 16-17.

For the Bearcats, Cater Skipper took home the low medalist of the day. He shot a 75.

Head Coach Rex Wade was thrilled for Skipper.

“That’s the first time a player has done that since 2001 when Jay Mosely got low medalist at the Area Tournament,” Wade said.

Will Powell shot a 78, while Ray Dodson shot an 84.

Sam Surratt shot a 97, Cy Taunton shot a 98 and Ashton Aldridge finished out the day with 47 points on the front nine and 58 points on the back nine, giving the team a total of 334 points.

Columbus beat out the Bearcats with a team total of 319, while LaGrange placed 3rd with 341 points, and TCC close behind with 342 points.

“I’m just super happy for the whole team,” Wade said. “They put their head down and just went to work. It was a super tough course, and I wasn’t expecting such low scores.”

The Lady Cats faced stiff competition as well.

Columbus took home first with 256 points, while Troup County High School narrowly edged out the Lady Cats with 342 points.

The Lady Cats had a total of 343 points.

Reece Conley shot a 106 for the Lady Cats, while Anastasia Davis shot a 117.

Paige Overman shot a 120, while Emily Coxwell and Reid Brouillet finished up the match with 135 points and 139 points respectively.

With the Region Championship under their belt, the Lady Cats Golf Team will now head to the State Championship Tournament for their first time ever.

“It’s definitely a great opportunity for them,” Wade said.

The Bearcats Golf Team will be making their second appearance, after placing 3rd last year.

The State Championship will feature 12 of the best teams in Region 1-AAAA competing against each other.

Wade thanked all of the Golf Team’s supporters, saying although the season isn’t over yet, he knows the team couldn’t have made it this far without their support.
