The GCA Lady Cougars basketball season came to an end last week. It began with the girls hosting the first round of the state tournament against Lafayette Christian last Tuesday night, ultimately winning 71-37.

The first quarter started off strong, with Ella Harrell and Mary Glenn Warr both scoring 6 points, followed by Lainey McRae, who scored 4 points, and Katherine Griffin, who scored 2 points with a lay-up.

The girls had their best round in the second quarter, scoring 23 points. McRae led the team, scoring 12 points. Warr scored 5 points with a lay-up and a free throw, followed by Harrell with 4 points, and Zoe Wells, who made a lay-up.

The girls kept their momentum going after halftime, again scoring 23 points in the third quarter. This time, Wells led the team, scoring 16 points with four three-pointers and two lay-ups. McRae also scored 4 points, followed by Warr with a three-pointer.

The team closed out the game with 7 points in the fourth quarter. Wells made a three-pointer, followed by Harrell and Chloe Brogdon, who each scored 2 points with lay-ups.

“We’ve been working on a few things on defense,” Coach Lance Godwin said. “We came out with a different defense tonight… Our girls shot better tonight, that was a big thing. After we got back from that region tournament, we had three practices of just running up the floor, stopping and shooting. It paid off tonight.” He continued, “We’ve got to tweak some of that defense, defense has got to be better. The next team we play shoots better than that.”

Godwin had a right to be nervous, as the Lady Cougars traveled to Watkinsville last Friday to face off against Westminster Christian Academy.

There, the Lady Cougars unfortunately lost, 38-50, bringing their season to a close.
